The Verbal Behavior Laboratory (VBLAB) is affiliated with the graduate program in Psychology: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) at California State University, Sacramento. The conceptual framework of all research conducted in the VBLAB was set forth by B.F.Skinner's (1957) analysis of language as learned behavior, and further developed by P. J. Horne and C. F. Lowe (1996).

Currently, our research focuses on understanding environmental conditions that give rise to communicative behaviors, as well as manipulate these conditions as a way to teach different forms of communication to individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. We are also interested in evaluating the role that language (verbal behavior) plays in the acquisition and maintenance of complex problem solving skills, typically measured via symbolic matching-to-sample procedures.

Most of our research projects involve arrangements in which instructions, presentation of visual stimuli and rewards are manipulated to either evoke or increase novel verbal and non-verbal behaviors in children. One of our goals is to refine procedures typically used by ABA practitioners to teach language and problem-solving skills to individuals with disabilities.
